Santa Monica Pier and Beach

The Santa Monica Pier/Beach is just west of DTLA (downtown Los Angeles) and has been in several movies such as Forrest Gump, Iron Man, Hancock, and Beverly Hills Cop 3. It’s a very lively spot with plenty of things to do! Some of it’s features include it’s historic Merry-Go-Round, Ferris Wheel, an arcade, a marine education aquarium, and even trapeze school over the pier! There are plenty of shops that sell everything from food to souvenirs like your name engraved on a piece of rice. Several street performers will keep you entertained with singing and dancing. Don’t forget to bring a beach towel to lay on the soft sand and catch some rays!

Melrose Avenue

Melrose Avenue is one of LA’s most famous streets, and is lined with shops and dining. You will have quite a hard time finding parking, so make sure to leave yourself plenty of time (and bring money for the parking meters). It’s not uncommon to run into celebrities like Justin Bieber, Jennifer Hudson, and Zayn. While there are stores like Adidas and Fred Segal here, many of the shops are indie.

Hollywood Walk of Fame

This iconic street has 2,700 stars, with shopping and dining on both sides. There are always street performers and costumed characters looking to make a quick buck, so make sure to have cash if you want to snap a pic with them. These are not cheap costumes at all – you will be amazed at the money and effort put into some of them. This street is always jam-packed with tourists and bustling with activity.

Venice Beach

An amazing place for people watching, Venice beach is full of skateboarders, bicyclists, and people strolling through the strip. There is a skate park, outdoor gym (Muscle Beach), and many colorful murals. As with many touristy spots in Callifornia, there are several vendors and street performers here too. The actual beach is beautiful, with a huge sand area leading up to the shoreline. Parking is at a premium so you’ll be circling around for a bit trying to find a parking place.

Rodeo Drive

One of the most famous streets in the world, Rodeo Drive is 3 blocks of more than 100 well-known luxury shopping boutiques such as Chanel, Cartier, Dior, Hermes, and many more. Hours are short: 10am to 6pm Monday through Saturday, and noon to 5pm Sundays. If you happen to be here during the holidays, don’t miss the annual Rodeo Drive Holiday Lighting Celebration!

Disneyland of course is another great must-see destination, but was too obvious to put on this list. If you’ve been to LA, what’s your favorite place?
