If you have naturally curly/coily hair, especially Type 4, then you know the frustration of trying to find hair products that work for your hair type. Your hair is likely low porosity, meaning it doesn’t readily absorb moisture. If your hair isn’t adequately moisturized, your curls can’t pop the way they were meant to. Also, hair that isn’t properly moisturized tends to break, dashing your dreams of Rapunzel length hair. So what should you do? Luckily I did the trial and error for you and rounded up the best hair products for 4C hair!

Shampoo

Shea Moisture Jamaican Black Castor Oil Strengthen and Restore Shampoo

This is a clarifying shampoo, so it deep cleans hair to get rid of all the product buildup lurking on your hair and scalp. Most clarifying shampoos strip the hair of it’s natural oils, but Shea Moisture hydrates instead. Contains Jamaican Black castor oil which is a known hair strengthener, and Shea Butter to hydrate and reduce breakage. Type 4 hair thrives with this shampoo!

Shea Moisture Manuka Honey and Mafula Oil Intensive Hydration Shampoo

Shea Moisture designed this shampoo specifically for Type 4 hair. When they say intensive hydration they mean it! My hair was completely transformed after using this only twice. Some people say this shampoo burns their scalp, but neither me nor anyone I know have had any problems at all. Also sulfate free, this still gives an amazing lather and really boosts hydration.

Creme of Nature Sulfate Free Moisture & Shine

From their Argan Oil line, this shampoo detangles and moisturizes. Yes, a detangling shampoo! The lather is out of this world, and it instantly melts tangles away. No alcohol, no petrolatum, no mineral oil, and no sulfates. A huge plus – it smells absolutely divine! TIP: The old formulation is better. Look for the red bottle shown in the picture.

Conditioner

Carol’s Daughter Black Vanilla Moisture & Shine Hydrating Conditioner

Formulated with Shea, Biotin, and Pro-vitamin B5, this conditioner can also be used as a co-wash. The Carol’s Daughter website claims this conditioner instantly improves dry hair by 80%. From my personal experience, this is true. No parabens, no mineral oil, no artificial colors, no petroleum, and smells wonderful!

Aussie 3 Minute Miracle Moist

Natural hair queens rave about this conditioner for good reason. It’s cheap and effective. It has excellent slip and any tangles you have just slide right out. In 3 minutes! I’m sure we all want to cut down on the time wash day takes. Well this is how you do it! It’s very hydrating and smells delicious.

Deep Conditioner

Shea Moisture Intensive Hydration Hair Masque

Another product in Shea Moisture’s Manuka Honey and Mafura Oil line, this deep conditioner seriously hydrates parched hair. It strengthens and revitalizes over-processed, damaged, or color-treated hair, and gives frizz free shine. I like to switch up deep conditioners every now and then, but this one remains a constant staple.

Mielle Organics Babassu Oil and Mint Deep Conditioner

This leaves your hair smelling minty fresh, but more importantly, it restores dry and damaged hair! It infuses your hair with protein and moisture, strengthening every strand. If you’re looking to incorporate protein AND moisture into your hair routine, you’ll definitely want to add this. It’s a little pricey when you consider the size, but it’s definitely worth it.

Texture ID Deep Treatment Masque

This heat activated deep conditioner is so underrated! To lock in moisture, it contains 5 oils: sweet almond, coconut, jojoba, argan, and safflower oils. It also contains wheat protein, honey, and aloe vera to strengthen, hydrate, repair, and reduce breakage. After one use, you will see a difference in strength and hydration, including defined curls!

Leave-in Conditioner

Creme of Nature Pure Honey ‘Break Up Breakage’ Leave-in Conditioner

I just can’t say enough positive things about this leave-in! I’ve tried countless other brands and formulations including liquid sprays and milks, but NONE of them hydrate like this one! It’s a spray lotion that KEEPS hair hydrated! I used it when I had braids, and you know that doing the prep for that means you have to blow dry but can’t moisturize. That’s a death sentence to Type 4 hair. This leave-in changes everything! It deeply moisturizes and soaks in completely, leaving no residue or slippery feeling. This protects against breakage and contains no sulfates or mineral oil. If you only try one thing from this list, it should be this one!

Buy at Target $7.79

Carol’s Daughter Almond Milk Conditioner

This is a lightweight milk leave-in that reverses damage, strengthens and protects, and restores softness. Moisturizes better than liquid leave-ins, but nowhere near as well as Creme of Nature.

Buy at Sally Beauty $13.59

And that’s it! These are all products that I personally use and love. If you use any products that are amazing and not listed here, post them in the comments section so everyone can see!
